The idea of a machine proving theorems in logic, and the idea of using logic to understand what a machine was doing ... this double relationship began to inspire me because it was clearly not very simple. The relationship wasn't just an inverse relationship "I bite you and you bite me": the computer says: "I will automate your logic" and the logic says "I will tell you what your programs mean". These are two different relationships. [from http://www.informatics.sussex.ac.uk/users/mfb21/interviews/milner/]

theory of fictions: the production of all that language whose terms do not refer to real entities into language whose terms do refer to real entities but "a fictitious entity is an object, the existence of which is feigned by the imagination, feigned for the purpose of discourse, and which, when so formed, is spoken of as a real one" (Bentham).

Quine on Bentham and language: //Another striking trait of scientific philosophy [since the nineteenth century] has been an increasing concern with the nature of language. In responsible circles this has not been a retreat from more serious issues. It is an outcome of critical scruples that are traceable centuries back in the classical British empiricists Locke, Berkeley and Hume, and are clearer in Bentham. It has been appreciated increasingly in the past sixty years that our traditional introspective notions -our notions of meaning, idea, concept, essence, all undisciplined and undefined- afford a hopelessly flabby and unmanageable foundations for a theory of the world. Control is gained by focusing on words, on how they are learned and used, and how they are related to things// Quine, W.V. //Theories and Things//. The objective of the meeting is twofold. The first is to review the modern views on the Mars - solar wind interaction and its impact on the Martian atmosphere. The second is to bring together teams working with the data from plasma instruments operational now at Mars, i.e., the particle and field sensors aboard MGS and MEX.
